Electoral Commission use social media to target young voters

The Electoral Commission is using social media website Facebook to reach and encourage a younger generation to register to vote.

thu 15 apr 2010

The campaign, which launched on 10th April, asks every single UK Facebook user whether they are currently registered to vote, before redirecting them to a customised registration application.

Visits to the 'About My Vote' website peaked at just under 129,000 on the day that the election was announced (6 April 2010) and have remained high since. The launch of the Facebook campaign last weekend is further boosting the campaign.

The registration form has been built by digital agency Redweb, who also designed, built and launched the About My Vote website. Redweb has retained the functionally of the registration form on the website and modelled this to fit the frame of the Facebook application page.

Clinton Proud, Head of Campaigns and Public Information at the Electoral Commission comments, "We recognise the power of social media tools, one of the largest in the UK being Facebook, in reaching a large audience and in particular those aged 18-24 years old which we identified as an under-represented age group. Redweb built a user friendly and attractive website for About My Vote and now developed a form that we can use as a Facebook application."

The campaign will run until 20th April 2010. Log on to www.aboutmyvote.co.uk for more information about how to register to vote.
