When the new service showing the 1861 census for England and Wales was made available online for the first time in mar, hits on the 1837online.com website trebled.
Total visits and unique visits that day increased by about 4.5 times and new registrations increased 15 times.
The activity was caused by extensive media interest and aided by new banners, skyscrapers and print media ads designed by digital communications agency Redweb, which produced the 1837online website last year.
London-based 1837online.com provides internet-based genealogical services to professional and non-professional researchers.
The 1861 census is the oldest census to go online so far and includes data about famous people such as Florence Nightingale, available on a pay-per-view basis.
Until now, the data has only been available at the Family Records Centre in London or at certain libraries.
1837online.com managing director Colin Miller said the census was "incredibly useful if you´re trying to do your family history, as it enables users to find out not only where their ancestors lived, but who they lived with."
